Machining Undercuts on Surfaces

This would be less time consuming than projecting splines and cutting to contours. If you do this alot, make or setup a tilting vise with a known pivot point and use that point as your Z plane datum, then you won't have to reset your tools or reference point. If your blocks are steel, rough out on a vise, and finish on a magnetic sine chuck.

3D Surface Contour Finish

I would use a Surface finish blend. If you're going to use a 1/8" ball mill, take the lower chain and use xform offset contour and offset .06 in, the You can pick the solid, and use the upper and newly created lower chain as blend curves. Course, if that is just a flat top with a radius, I would use a corner rounding endmill to shape the feature.

3D Contour Tool path

Posted January 6, 2012. Had to switch from a 3D Contour path to a Surface finish project Tpath because the ball mill I used didn't follow the surface at bottom of cut. I couldn't figure out why but I had to go with what works so I switched to the surface projected path. The geometry I chained for the 3D Contour was projected onto a compound angle.

Undercutting with a slot mill

Posted June 27, 2013. We currently are working on a part that has a 25 degree undercut bevel. We are trying to use a slot mill with corner radius to cut from the top down using the top edge of the cutter. The only way we can make it work is to lie to the computer and tell it that the cutter has a full radius, and when we send it to the machine ...

Machining Strategies

Contour machining. The Contour strategy is designed to give you an optimal finish for steep regions in your geometry. It is typically applied to areas where the slope exceeds an angle of 30 degrees. The Contour algorithm virtually slices the geometry into horizontal layers. At every layer, the toolpath then machines along the edge of the two ...

best surface finish

Verified Members. 638. Posted January 11, 2004. Generally speaking the parallel toolpath is best on flat surfaces. A bottle mold core or cavity doesn't usually have a lot of flat surfaces. Have you tried contour with the shallow option. Project blend would also work well if you use the parting lines to blend between.
