The 8.5 has a 1 1/4 inch pinion nut and 7/16 ring gear bolts with 3/4 inch heads and left hand threads. The 8.2 has a 1 1/8 inch pinion nut and 3/8 ring gear bolts with 9/16 heads and right hand threads. The early A body 8.5 rer ends didn't have c clips on the axles, but all internal parts are the same as the other 8.5 rear ends.

Watch on. I want a HD Differential. I pull a 8500lb trailer. 8.6 runs to hot. trade it for a 3/4 or 1 ton, you'll be happier all around. I would doubt that is is a direct swap. I would think you would have a better time with a 6.2l rear axle being "bolt on".

Both calipers face the rear, clear all of the suspension. The caliper brackets need to be redrilled to fit the 4 bolt pattern on the axle housing flange. The parking brake cables from the Cadillac also work and eliminate the intermediate cable and do not cross under the middle of the car. I have photos of it mocked up on an 8.2" 10 bolt.

These 8.5 rear ends had bolt in axles instead of c clips, but the internal parts are the same as the other 8.5 rear ends. The '73 and later 8.5 will not fit your car.

I just got what appears to be a 1978 Nova 10 Bolt. The Axle tube stamping is: 2TX G 80472. The 2TX decodes to 1978 Nova 3.08:1 Open; G is Detroit Gear; 8047 is not defined on any Nova web site - I assume that it is 8 for 1978 and 047 for the 47th day of that year (Feb 16); the 2 should mean second shift.
