Ndumo Game Reserve (NGR), South Africa, was established in 1924 as a hippo sanctuary after hunting in the late 1800's severely depleted South Africa's hippo population and is also recognised as a wetland of international importance (proclaimed Ramsar site No. 887 in 1997) (McCracken, 2008, Meer and Schnurr, 2013; Pooley, 2021).
